MBA PS (Energy Management): Overview

Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), established in 1953, was the first management education institute set up in India. The then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone and Dr. B. C. Roy, Chief Minister of West Bengal, was the founder President of the Institute. The Institute offers regular courses in MBA-Public Systems (MBA-PS) with specialization in Energy Management, along with three other specializations as well as other regular courses.

To meet Govt. of India's ambitious target of addition 175 GW from renewable within 2022 there is a huge requirement of skilled manpower. Solar and Wind technology is expected to add approximately 85,000 full time direct Renewable energy jobs and over 3.3 million job in related sectors. There will also be a huge manpower requirement in Energy Efficiency & Analytics, Green Building, Power Trading, Smart Grid and Electric Vehicle in near future other than Energy Intensive Process Industries, Power Plant etc. At IISWBM, the Energy Management course calls for all round development of the participating students. The department thus focuses on the following areas:

  • Academic input : The syllabus is regularly updated to cater to the need of industry and society in the era of inclusive growth challenged by energy resource availability in clean environment, as we are poised to fulfill our dream of India 2020. Thus, it fully covers the syllabus of the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) examinations organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) as per Energy Conservation Act, in conformity with Electricity Act and other relevant laws and concerns of the Governments and the Corporate. The students of only this Master Degree course in India, who will successfully complete Energy Management course from IISWBM, are eligible to directly appear for CEM of CEA International of Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), USA, worldwide renowned certifications prevalent for four decades. The global norms is to attend a mandatory international standard training seminar workshop prior to appear in the Certification Examination of AEE, USA.

  • Social interactions : The students attend seminars outside IISWBM and organize seminars in IISWBM. They also organize meetings of the Energy Club and the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) IISWBM Kolkata Chapter, the first Chapter in India of AEE, the largest body of energy professionals in the world.

  • Industrial Exposure : Internship, short term projects and final projects by the students are on real life problems. To maximize industry interaction, the department invites renowned energy experts from industry and also organize regular visits to different relevant industries. Our faculty members on a regular basis perform various consultancy and research projects funded by various Govt. organizations such as Coal India Ltd., BEE, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) Ltd, Indian Renewable Development Agency (IREDA) Ltd., WBSEDCL, Sakti Foundation, National Bank of Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) etc. The energy management students can get a chance to learn and earn also during their study if they actively participate in such projects.

The Institute, apart from an excellent faculty, has state-of-the-art facilities like Energy Laboratory, Cyber Lab and Digital Library. IISWBM has collaborated, for value addition to the courses, with some of the leading international business schools, such as, University of Memphis, Desales University, The World Resource Institute (Washington) in U.S.A., The HNU University of Applied Sciences, Stuttgart Institute of Management & Technology, Fraunhoffer Institute in Germany, University of Cambridge and Coventry University in UK and Association of Energy Engineers in U.S.A (Refer https://www.aeecenter.org). The Institute, in 2001, started Energy Club, first of its kind, to provide a common platform to Industry and Academia for sharing the best practices and accelerate the efficient use of energy as well as productive use of renewable energy. The AEE Kolkata Chapter at IISWBM (Refer http://www.aeeindia.org.in) is boast of securing the international Students Scholarship as well as International awards in the various categories in each years since the year of its inception in 2003, totalling to more than 30 for each, besides their achievements in the National front. This year also we got two international prizes for Best Chapter Meeting and Best Newsletter. Five of our students also received International Scholarship this year as previous.
